West Ham United stance on Jose Mourinho mooted amid London Stadium links
Gabby Agbonlahor doesn’t believe any Premier League clubs will “touch” Jose Mourinho amid recent links with West Ham United.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager has been backed to take over the reins at the London Stadium after admitting he would be interested in returning to England in the future [talkSPORT, 24 October].
Although the links have quickly gained traction, talkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor has labelled the Portuguese manager an attention seeker after Katie Shanahan questioned if he would join the Irons.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (25 October, 7:54) she said: “Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy said last night that he’d be a good fit at West Ham, but first of all can you see him back in the Premier League?”
Agbonlahor replied: “Did you not hear his words, he said at the bottom of the Premier League. That’s what he said, didn’t he? Are you saying West Ham are a bottom team?
“I don’t think he’s being serious. He’s a bit of an attention seeker, isn’t he? He says that and then says I just want to talk about the game.
“He’s basically fed up with the referees in UEFA competitions but I don’t see him coming back to England, I don’t think anyone is going to touch him.”
Will West Ham sack Julen Lopetegui at the London Stadium?
Out of nowhere, there seems to be so much talk around Mourinho and the Hammers purely because of some comments O’Hara and Cundy made on talkSPORT on Thursday.
While some Hammers fans are keen to see a change in the dugout after the miserable start to the season under Julen Lopetegui, appointing Mourinho as his successor would be a massive step in the other direction.
The Portuguese manager has been successful throughout his career and is rightly known as the special one, but his career has slowed slightly in the last few years and there is no evidence to suggest he would be a success at the London Stadium.
As Agbonlahor suggests, the former United manager can be a bit of an attention seeker at times and it seems unlikely that the current Hammers hierarchy would be interested in a manager who operates in that manner.
These links likely won’t go away over the coming months, but it seems as though they are being played down before they have even got up and running.
