West Ham United: David Sullivan has massive decision on his hands as David Moyes news emerges

David Sullivan has a massive decision on his hands over the future of David Moyes at West Ham.

talkSPORT reported on its website on Thursday (18 April) that the Hammers boss is “increasingly likely” to leave the club this summer.

Although the Scotsman previously revealed that he has been offered a new deal, he hasn’t put pen to paper ahead of his current contract expiring at the end of the season.

It’s no secret that technical director Tim Steidten has been working on a list of potential candidates for some time to replace Moyes.

But that was seen as a way to ensure the Irons weren’t caught cold during the season should the form take a significant dip and a new appointment have to be made.

While the results haven’t been at the level expected throughout this calendar year, the performances in Europe have ensured Moyes is likely to remain in charge until the end of the campaign.

David Moyes can be proud of West Ham against Bayer Leverkusen

It would have provided his chances of staying on at the London Stadium next year with a significant boost had we come out on top against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday.

It was an excellent performance from every single one of the players, who gave everything against the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions.

After Moyes was criticised by some people for perhaps being too negative in the 2-0 defeat in Germany, it was quite the opposite in the second leg.

We came out of the traps quickly and caused Leverkusen all kinds of problems, with Michail Antonio handing us a deserved lead heading into the break.

But the referee absolutely killed the game in the second half. It was one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen from an official.

That led to Jeremie Frimpong finding a late equaliser to ensure it ended 1-1 on the night and meant we exited the competition at the quarter-final stage.

If it was down to that performance alone, I would have absolutely no issue with Moyes staying on next season.

It was exactly what we, as West Ham fans, want to see from our side. Passion, fight and positivity.

That hasn’t always been the case this season, however, after we’ve been embarrassed on more than one occasion.

Leaving the London Stadium after the 6-0 defeat against Arsenal and trudging down those steps from the away end at St James’ Park on the back of the capitulation against Newcastle United are just two occasions that spring to mind.

That’s before even mentioning the defeat against Crystal Palace, where I was fortunate to not get my hands on a ticket.

I am, quite frankly, sick of seeing the “careful what you wish for” warnings being thrown around.

It’s an easy comment to make for people who aren’t paying their hard-earned money to follow the team up and down the country.

Moyes undoubtedly deserves plenty of respect for the job he’s done over the past few years.

Qualifying for European football three years in a row is nothing short of extraordinary. But that is the promise we were made when we moved to the London Stadium.

David Sullivan has decision to make on David Moyes at West Ham

I have been on the fence about Moyes’s situation for some time, but the defeat against Crystal Palace has finally made my mind up.

We have been poor on far too many occasions this season and that isn’t acceptable, particularly given who some of those performances have come against.

It just feels as though we potentially need something new because there is little chance we’re going to be in Europe for the next campaign now.

If Sullivan decides to move on from the Scotsman, the big questions are around who we are going to get and how much money they will be given.

If we want someone to take us to the next level, they are certainly going to have to be an impressive individual and will need to be handed a sizeable amount of cash.

I’m thankful for the job Moyes has done over the past few years, he’s made some of our dreams come true and deserves respect for that.

But the time has come for a change and we must start putting the wheels in motion ahead of what will be a huge summer at the London Stadium.
