West Ham: Pundit Frank McAvennie blasts Jesse Lingard as transfer situation rumbles on

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham to wave goodbye to the chances of signing Jesse Lingard, with money clearly said to be his main motivation.

The Irons are still keen to bring 29-year-old Jesse Lingard back to the London Stadium as the midfielder is set to leave Manchester United at the end of June, as reported by The Sun.

The Manchester United man enjoyed a stellar loan spell in east London during the second half of the 2020/21 season scoring nine goals and notching five assists, but things have not gone well since.

Former West Ham striker McAvennie doesn’t believe he will return to the club.

“Jesse Lingard doesn’t want to come so wave that one goodbye,” he told West Ham Zone.

“He’s had chances to sign so he’s clearly hanging on for another team for some reason. I don’t know why because he would’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.

“You can see by his Instagram and social media that he loved it at West Ham, with his wee dances in the dressing had me thinking that’s a guy who’s enjoying his football.

“He went back to Manchester United to sit on the bench and in the stand and that’s someone with no ambition.

“He’s clearly just in it for the money and I don’t have a problem with that, I would rather a player go get a little bit less money and play football.”

The Lingard saga looks set to bubble on into the latter stages of the summer with wages seemingly an issue for the London club.

Express journalist Ryan Taylor claimed on 15 June [via GIVEMESPORT] that Lingard and his agent are “probably bargaining” for a better deal given the fact that the 29-year-old will come as a free transfer.

If Lingard does sign for the Hammers, he could well face Manchester United’s fierce rivals Manchester City in the Irons’ first match of the 2022/23 season.
