West Ham: Pundit demands David Sullivan to speak out about Nayef Aguerd transfer

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham are closing in on a deal for Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd with ExWHUemployee suggesting on his Patreon account on Friday 17 June that the defender is “in the building” at Rush Green.

There has been plenty of last-minute panic for the Irons, with The Daily Star suggesting on Thursday 16 June that Newcastle United were planning to “hijack” the Hammers deal for the 26-year-old Moroccan international.

However, McAvennie has been less than impressed with how the deal has been conducted.

“It’s been going on for ages now and I would like West Ham to just come out and say we’ve signed this boy without the fanfare that goes with it,” he told West Ham Zone.

“The owners have come out with fanfare before and they’ve never got anyone and that’s why they get a bad reputation off the supporters.

“I’d like to see Mr Sullivan come out and say we’ve signed this boy, rather than saying we’re going for this player and it just brings the attention to other teams.”

The Moroccan international’s move to the Hammers has been long overdue and will be a welcome boost for David Moyes as he looks to bolster his defensive options.

Aguerd played 31 times for Rennes in the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season scoring twice and notching three assists.

The defender will be chucked in at the deep end with the Hammers facing champions Manchester City on the opening day of the season.
