Tony Cottee delivers honest verdict on West Ham after loss v Liverpool

West Ham lost 1-0 against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday (5 March) but David Moyes can take big positives from the game.

The Hammers missed Declan Rice through an unconfirmed illness, and the task became really difficult from the onset.

Despite that, the Hammers produced a strong performance but they failed to take their chances.

Tony Cottee has suggested on Twitter that the Hammers were “wasteful”.

The Hammers legend wrote: “It was always going to be a tough game today but without Dec it’s just become that little bit harder. The boys need to dig in and take any chance we get.

He added in a separate post: “We have been so wasteful. Some of these chances needed to be taken.”

Spot on

West Ham have a poor record at Anfield but it was encouraging to see that they fought tooth and nail against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The winning goal came from Sadio Mane who took full advantage of lax defending. There was a VAR check for the goal but Mane was marginally onside.

The visitors should have equalised before the break after Pablo Fornals found himself in a 1v1 situation with Alisson, after being set free by a brilliant pass from Ben Johnson.

He tried to lob the Brazilian goalkeeper and the ball was later cleared off the line by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

In the second half, the Hammers got yet another golden opportunity to score. Manuel Lanzini got the better of the Reds right-back but he horribly missed the target.

Michail Antonio got another chance towards the end, but it was well defended by Andrew Robertson.

They were really impressive in the second half and on another day they could have won the game as well.

In other West Ham news, the club want to sign a ‘Brilliant’ Chelsea player who will tick a major box for David Moyes.
