Simon Jordan raises West Ham United point as Ruben Amorim slammed ahead of Manchester United move

Simon Jordan made a West Ham United point as he tore into Ruben Amorim for “photobombing” himself into jobs this summer.

Reports suggest that the Sporting Lisbon manager is set to succeed Erik ten Hag as the next Manchester United manager after the Dutchman was sacked following the Red Devil’s defeat at the London Stadium [Fabrizio Romano, 29 October].

Amorim was understood to be close to becoming the Irons boss this summer [Alex Crook, 29 October] and talkSPORT host Jordan has questioned his behaviour during the time he was linked with the Hammers.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday (30 October, 10:25) he said: “It is always strange and it often evades my understanding as to why some people can keep things to themselves and other people can’t.

“We’ve had Thomas Tuchel appointed as the England manager and I think the FA are useless, but they managed to suppress the information curb about who they were going to put in situ for the job, yet in this situation, you can’t.

“I don’t know what to make of him. I listened to Jose Fonte yesterday talking about the calibre of the man, but I see him photobombing himself into jobs in the summer, putting himself on offer for West Ham and Liverpool and I don’t know if that’s quite the behaviour I would expect of an elite manager.

“[David] Sullivan probably didn’t take him because of the level of backroom staff he wanted at West Ham and I think that was one of the deterrents for West Ham to have taken him.

“Ultimately if Manchester United were looking at him, I’d think West Ham United would be looking at him too given the fact he’s at that level of value.”

Why did West Ham not appoint Ruben Amorim after David Moyes’ London Stadium exit?

There was a lot of outrage from figures like Jordan earlier this year when it appeared as though Tim Steidten and the Hammers hierarchy were flying prospective new managers into the UK while Moyes was still in post.

Ultimately, it is still unclear whether or not that was the club’s or the manager’s decision at the time, but for whatever reason, Amorim didn’t end up taking over the reins in East London and Julen Lopetegui did.

Whether that was the correct decision, only time will tell. Lopetegui’s start to life with the Hammers has been mixed, but he has not brought the media circus to the London Stadium like Amorim may well have done.

The Hammers could well have dodged a bullet if you agree with Jordan’s statement that the soon-to-be United manager isn’t behaving in the manner that you would expect from an “elite manager”.

However, if Amorim hits the ground running at Old Trafford a fair few fans may be left questioning the Irons’ decision-making.
