Simon Jordan delivers ‘Significant’ David Moyes verdict amid calls for West Ham United sacking

Simon Jordan believes that the criticism of David Moyes is “justified” but admits that West Ham are better with him as manager at the London Stadium.

The Hammers claimed their first victory of 2024 on Monday 26 February, completing a 4-2 win over Brentford in the Premier League, ending a winless run of eight matches in all competitions.

Moyes has received a lot of abuse for his style of play in recent weeks, with many mounting pressure on the club to sack him.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Tuesday (27 February, 10:10 am), Jordan said: “The recent descent is probably justified to some extent. If you score three goals in seven games, get knocked out of the FA Cup by a Championship side, and get beaten by six at home to Arsenal, you are going to get people who are not happy.

“Also, if you have a style of playing that is not the most progressive, in some peoples’ minds, then you’ll get criticism. You can suggest that your achievements warrant more balance in the argument – eighth in the Premier League, pretty significant in Europe, but also knocked out of both cups disappointingly.

“From his point of view, I would distil the season and do precisely what he is doing. He must balance whether he wants to listen to some of the rubbish and continue with that, and overcome it, or look at his stock and go out winning another European trophy.

“On the whole, I think West Ham are better for having David Moyes. I understand the arguments – I’m not blind. I do think at times they aren’t the easiest on the eye or the most forward-thinking. But that is David’s stock and trade. That is what you get with him and he shouldn’t have to apologise.”

Will David Moyes sign a new contract at West Ham United?

Many fans have grown frustrated with Moyes over the last few weeks, with the Hammers suffering an embarrassing FA Cup exit to Bristol City, a 6-0 thrashing by Arsenal, and just four goals scored in 2024.

That was until Jarrod Bowen recorded his first-ever senior hat-trick and Emerson Palmieri rocketed home an effort to beat Brentford 4-2, claiming the club’s first victory since a 2-0 win over the Gunners in December.

Those same fans who have been moaning and crying out for Moyes’ sacking have become very quiet after the performance against the Bees, and will likely be raving about the display.

The manager admitted that a contract is “on the table” at the London Stadium but is waiting until the end of the season to decide whether he wants to sign it or not. Criticism is a given in football, fans are allowed to have their opinions.

David Moyes has had a mixed season at West Ham

However, the abuse Moyes has received seems very harsh now, especially after showing signs that he can turn things around in the Premier League, just in time for an upcoming Europa League tie against Freiburg.

The London club have experienced so many special memories under Moyes, most of all lifting the Europa Conference League trophy last season. Although there is only so long a manager can live off the past, he deserves a lot more respect.

In other West Ham news, Jamie Carragher named three “top managers” as he agreed Moyes could face the sack.
