‘Signing of the season’ – Sidwell lauds West Ham midfield goal machine Soucek
Steve Sidwell believes West Ham have made the signing of the season in their goalscoring midfielder Tomas Soucek.
The former Aston Villa midfielder was full of praise for the Hammers after their 3-1 victory on Wednesday evening at Villa Park.
Speaking to BT Sport 2, Sidwell said the Irons look good in attack and defence. He said: “Looking very strong.
“Defensively they’re sound, disciplined.
“Going forward, very, very good. Everyone is willing to put in a shift and do the hard yards.
“They’re good both ends of the pitch. In Soucek and Lingard they’ve got goalscoring midfielders, what’s the premium on that nowadays?
“The signing of the season for me (Soucek) in terms of the all-round effect and impact on games.”
Strength to strength
Last nights victory at Villa Park was West Ham’s eleventh in the Premier League this season. The Hammers have won eight of their nine matches in all competitions in 2021 and show no signs of slowing down.
Jesse Lingard was a very welcome addition to the line-up. The Manchester United loanee bagged twice on his debut, already looking at home under Moyes.
Tomas Soucek has been in unbelievable form this campaign. His strike against Villa was his eighth of the season, ranking him first in the league for goalscoring midfielders without penalties.
As Sidwell said, he could well be the signing of the season. Without his goals, we’d be ten points worse off and fighting for the places in mid-table. He’ll be looking to add to his tally in our upcoming game against Fulham and Sheffield United.
As a West Ham fan, these are usually the games that pose a potential banana peel. Things feel very different this year. After minor set-backs, we keep getting back up and performing to very high standards.
It’ll be interesting to see how many points we can pick up in our next two games. Maybe then we can start talking about where we could finish this season.
