'He took it as a challenge' - Moyes raves about Coufal after West Ham win v Villa

West Ham put on a fantastic team performance to win 3-1 on Wednesday evening away to Aston Villa.

Jesse Lingard will take all the plaudits. The loanee was making his first Premier League appearance of the season. He made up for lost time by bagging two goals on his debut.

One man who had an equally good game, for different reasons, was Vladimir Coufal. The right-back occupied Jack Grealish, quite possibly the best player in the top-flight this season.

Speaking to BT Sport 2, David Moyes said he was very happy with his defender’s performance. He said: “Before the game he took it as a great challenge.

“He doesn’t see it as any problem he sees it as something he has to do, I think he’s done fantastic.

“He’s experienced, he’s been around a little bit. He didn’t half do a really good job on him.”

Czech mate doing great

West Ham made the signing of Coufal on the recommendation of his good friend Tomas Soucek. Both players signed permanent deals in the summer, joining from Slavia Prague.

We knew what we were getting with Soucek, but had no real expectations for his former teammate who he’d referred.

Coufal has been a wonderful addition to the squad. His attacking attributes and defensive solidarity have solved our long-standing issues at right-back.

Since his debut away to Leicester in October, Coufal’s notched three assists and completed 62.5% of his attempted dribbles [WyScout].

The number five has attempted the twelfth most crosses, 73, in the entire Premier League. He’s been a real creative force driving his way up the pitch.

On the other hand, he’s faced the likes of Grealish, Wilfried Zaha, Raheem Sterling and James Rodriguez. Every time you feel he’s going to be tested he rises to the occasion.

He’s in the top 15 players in the top-flight for defensive duels won, with 160.

Last night he was tasked with nullifying Grealish and he did just that. The Czech made 16 recoveries and eight interceptions.

Prior to this, he’d averaged 9.14 and 5.32 per 90. He goes into the big games without fear and leads by example.

Moyes has every right to be over the moon with the signing. Has Soucek got any other mates?

In other West Ham news, this ace proved that he’s Premier League quality with his display against Villa.
