Scott Minto: West Ham United winger has ‘done well’ on his first England call-up

West Ham United winger Jarrod Bowen has “done well” on his first international call-up for England, according to talkSPORT pundit Scott Minto.

The 25-year-old was handed his debut in England’s surprise 1-0 Nations League defeat to Hungary on Saturday 4 June.

Bowen also came off the bench in England’s draw against Germany in Munich as well as their stalemate against Italy on 11 June.

In what has been quite an uninspiring international break for England, Minto believes Bowen is one of the positives.

Talking on talkSPORT on Sunday 12 June, Minto said: “I think Jarrod Bowen’s done well in his time over the last few games, I really do.”

He has

Bowen has done well on his first international outing for Gareth Southgate’s side in what has been a long overdue call-up for the West Ham man.

However, whether he suits England’s methodical and control-based style of play remains to be seen.

Southgate is happy to remain solid and defensively stable whilst maintaining a level of possession and control in the game.

This is very different to David Moyes’ West Ham side which looks to set back and catch teams on the counterattack.

West Ham

Bowen thrives with space in behind defenders and moving in centrally.

England’s failure to move the ball forward quickly and break lines just doesn’t seem conducive to the winger’s strengths.

Too often England slow the ball down and allow defenders to get back behind the ball and kill the space that Bowen so often thrives on.

Southgate needs to rethink how he approaches matches in general as it would be a huge shame if this generation of England players weren’t given the opportunity to give the chance to express themselves.
