Ruben Amorim and West Ham United reveal emerges amid Man United update

Jacob Steinberg has revealed that West Ham United were cautioned Ruben Amorim was using them when they were linked with the manager ahead of the summer.

A 2-1 loss to the Irons in the Premier League on Sunday (27 October) was the last nail in the coffin for Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford and Manchester United are now set to rope in Amorim from Sporting CP (Sky Sports).

It is worth noting that West Ham were in talks to sign the Portuguese tactician, who even travelled to London for negotiations (The Athletic, 22 April), towards the end of last season before landing on Julen Lopetegui.

As Amorim edges closer to getting his desired move to England, Steinberg has said that the London Stadium was never a realistic destination for the 39-year-old.

“I get the frustration from West Ham fans over the apparent rejection of Amorim last summer but it was basically never going to happen”, Steinberg wrote on X (30 October).

“People away from club cautioned he was using them a bit. Only ever likely to leave Sporting for one of Europe’s big jobs. That’s not West Ham.

“It would have been exciting, it would have been a huge statement of intent, but it doesn’t sound like it was ever realistic from his side. Regardless of what you think of WHUFC board.”

West Ham United fans will be disappointed with Ruben Amorim rejection in hindsight

In hindsight, it is easy to see why West Ham fans are frustrated to have seen the club hire Lopetegui instead of Amorim.

Under the Spaniard, the Irons find themselves sitting 13th in the table with just three wins and 11 points in nine games. This is despite spending a significant amount of money on signing the likes of Max Kilman, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Crysencio Summerville in the summer.

Amorim’s Sporting, meanwhile, sit atop the Portuguese Primeira Liga with nine wins in nine.

Steinberg’s revelation is surprising because reports in May suggested that it was David Sullivan’s decision to bring in Lopetegui instead of Amorim against Mark Noble and Tim Steidten’s wishes (talkSPORT).

Nevertheless, the London-based club have to do with Lopetegui for the time being and it remains to be seen how Amorim will do on English soil with Manchester United.

The former Sevilla manager has been under a lot of pressure lately, but the win against the Red Devils will have given him some breathing room.
