Jamie Carragher has insisted that David Ornstein does not get much wrong as he reported that West Ham United are targeting an ambitious move for Ruben Amorim.

The Irons have joined Liverpool in the race to secure the 39-year-old, but after Ornstein reported that a move to the Reds is unlikely, West Ham may be in pole position to appoint Amorim as David Moyes' successor.

Carragher mentioned the likes of Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi as one other name who could make the move to Anfield instead of Amorim.

Posting on X, Carragher said: "Richard Hughes wanted De Zerbi at Bournemouth, so he must be the favourite if this is true. Ornstein doesn’t get much wrong to be fair."

West Ham could beat Liverpool to Ruben Amorim appointment

West Ham and Liverpool have had contrasting seasons thus far, with the Reds tussling for the title and the Hammers hitting a wall at exactly the wrong time, as they bid to secure European football for the fourth season running.

A Europa League quarter-final exit to Bayer Leverkusen, mixed with some ugly Premier League results including a 5-2 thrashing by Crystal Palace, have left West Ham two points off the top six with a minus nine goal difference, having played more matches than most of the teams around them.

Moyes' position has come under scrutiny, with West Ham's woeful performance at Selhurst Park seeing them go 4-0 down in little over half an hour, and as a result, their hopes of playing on the continent next season took a significant hit.

If, however, the Hammers release Moyes at the end of his contract and can land Amorim - one of the most sought-after managers in world football - it will be a huge statement of intent from the club's board.

And, if they beat the potential Premier League title winners in Liverpool to his signature, it's a managerial signing which could springboard West Ham into becoming one of England's top sides.
