Martin Allen: Declan Rice is the best England player right now
Former West Ham midfielder Martin Allen has stated that Delcan Rice is England’s best player at the moment.
Speaking on ExWHUemployee’s podcast during the international break, the reliable Hammers source decided to kick start the conversation by speaking about the Three Lions.
Allen, who has appeared on talkSPORT, made a rather big admission by stating that Rice was better than the likes of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker in the current squad.
He said on The West Ham Way podcast, “I’m really excited about this England team, more so because their best player is here at West Ham in Declan Rice.”
If one is to consider the England team over the last couple of years, then Allen probably makes a valid point.
Rice has been picked in every squad by Gareth Southgate, provided he’s been fit and has become almost undroppable for the England manager.
Over the past few months, he’s formed a seamless understanding with Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips at the heart of the Three Lions midfield.
If things go as they have, Phillips and Rice will probably be England’s double pivot at the World Cup next year.
That said, what Kane has done for this England side since his debut has been unquestioned.
Sterling too, has always shown up for the Three Lions regardless of whether or not he’s been a regular starter for Manchester City.
Walker has played in a plethora of roles and has been Southgate’s custodian whenever he’s wanted to play a back three.
These three are the only players we can think of who could be ahead of Rice, but since the start of last season, there’s no questioning that the Hammers ace has been the best of the lot.
