Lopetegui sack update emerges straight after West Ham win v Newcastle
Jacob Steinberg believes the showing that West Ham United put on in their 2-0 win against Newcastle was an “exceptional” performance.
The Hammers still sit 14th in the Premier League table after their win against the Magpies on 15 November but they now find themselves level on points with Bournemouth, who are the team above.
Reporting via his personal X account (25 November), Steinberg shared whether this win against Eddie Howe’s men could have saved the Spaniard’s job.
“Every chance a bad defeat would have been it for Lopetegui, so that’s an exceptional win,” he wrote.
“West Ham’s best performance for months. Paqueta back on it, Soler impressive, Antonio huge and Soucek always good for a big goal. Can Lopetegui build on this?”
West Ham and Julen Lopetegui got a lucky result against Newcastle
Prior to the match, there were rumours circling around about the next two games of the season being crucial for the former Wolves manager to save his job.
There have been times this season where the Hammers have pulled off some remarkable results such as their 2-1 Premier League win against Manchester United on 27 October but more often than not this term, the Spaniard’s squad has left a lot to be desired.
Of course, club captain Jarrod Bowen has once again been West Ham’s star man but the fact that Lopetegui still likely doesn’t know what his strongest starting XI is should be a cause for concern for fans.
For now, at least, it seems that Lopetegui has solidified his future at the London Stadium but if he goes back to losing ways, it’s likely that it’ll be curtains for the Spaniard sooner than he thinks which wouldn’t be ideal for either party.
