Kevin Nolan speaks out on David Moyes ‘uncertainty’ amid West Ham United exit

Kevin Nolan has suggested how David Moyes’ actions during the 2023/24 campaign derailed the season for West Ham.

The Hammers experienced a tough season at the London Stadium, which resulted in the Scot and his coaching team leaving at the end of the season, with Julen Lopetegui coming in to replace him.

Moyes revealed in January that he had a new offer on the table to extend his contract with the Irons. However, he had decided to wait until the end of the season to decide his future.

Speaking via BBC Radio 5 Live, quoted by Hammers News on Sunday (26 May), Nolan said: “Obviously you heard the rumours [about Moyes’ new deal]. It was clouded from January when the boss came out and said ‘We’re going to talk about it at the end of the season’.

“You always see a change in players’ attitudes and minds and I think that always adds up because of the uncertainty. Players were then always asking us as coaches: ‘What’s going on? Do you know, have you heard anything’, and we hadn’t.

“As much as I would like to say (to the players) being in it, I knew what was going on, I actually didn’t have a clue.”

David Moyes causes uncertainty at West Ham United

Moyes’ decisions certainly did West Ham no favours this season, with his contract set to expire after the final match against Manchester City.

Of course, having led the Hammers to three consecutive seasons in Europe, as well as lifting the Europa Conference League title, he earned the right to make decisions during his tenure.

It seemed to have had an adverse effect on the club, having dropped out of the top six spots and finishing ninth in the Premier League, as well as being kicked out of the Europe League.

Lopetegui has a few problems to fix already, some of which can be solved in the summer transfer market, but some will need more than just money thrown at them.

David Moyes will be remembered fondly by West Ham supporters.

The decision from Moyes not to open up on his future at the club will have pushed some players out this summer, as well as putting possible signing prospects off a move to the London Stadium.

When Nolan opens up about how the manager “clouded” West Ham’s season, it is clear that he did not make the correct decision in January. Moyes did not deserve the disappointing exit this summer, though.

In other West Ham news, the wife of a Hammers player has potentially stirred up a controversy with her recent comments on social media accusing the club of bias.
