Jarrod Bowen return hailed at West Ham with Ally McCoist wowed

Jarrod Bowen gives West Ham United “something special” after scoring on his return to the side against Chelsea, Ally McCoist has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT (4 February, 6:08am), McCoist couldn’t praise Bowen enough after his display against the Blues on Monday, with the Irons captain having missed their last five games through injury.

Bowen came straight back into the Hammers’ starting XI to lead the line at Stamford Bridge, and pounced on a mistake by Levi Colwill late in the first half to net the opener in their eventual 2-1 defeat.

McCoist said: “One thing I don’t think’s up for debate – West Ham United are a far better team with Bowen playing in it.

“He just gives them something special, doesn’t he? Good, good player, he’s been a great signing I’ve got to say.”

West Ham revitalised by Jarrod Bowen return

You’d be hard pressed to find a Premier League team who wouldn’t be improved by having Bowen in their side, but the Hammers’ reliance on the 28-year-old so far this season has been clear.

That reliance has also been underlined in the past five games without their skipper, which has seen the Irons enact a change of manager following their spiralling form in the last days of Julen Lopetegui’s reign.

McCoist’s admiration of Bowen is nothing new, and Graham Potter will likely feel the same after watching his captain keep his composure to put the visitors 1-0 up in the London derby on 3 February.

Before his injury, Bowen had netted decisive goals in almost every single victory recorded by Lopetegui in his doomed spell at the London Stadium, and Potter will hope that trend continues now he’s back fit.

The Deadline Day signing of Evan Ferguson should alleviate the burden off Bowen’s shoulders for the rest of the season, but as Potter continues to re-shape the Irons’ squad, his captain’s place is assured.
