Glen Johnson suggests West Ham star Rice won’t go to Man United

Former West Ham academy product Glen Johnson has made a bold claim regarding the immediate future of Hammers ace Declan Rice.

The 37-year-old has suggested that, despite Manchester United’s interest, Liverpool and Chelsea would be a preferred destination for the England international.

Rice has been a mainstay in David Moyes’ team this season and his performances have rightly attracted interest from some of the world’s biggest clubs.

Speaking to BettingOdds.com, Johnson said: “If I was Declan I would be a bit concerned, to be honest with you. I’d be thinking Manchester United aren’t the Manchester United of old.

“There used to be a time when anytime Manchester United came calling, you go. It was the number one place. Everyone wanted to go.

“But they don’t have that appeal anymore. I don’t think he’d end up there whether they want him or not.”

Desperately needed at both clubs

Rice’s importance to West Ham’s style of play and superb form is undeniable and losing the 22-year-old would leave an enormous hole in Moyes’ team.

Everything he has achieved in his career has come from the hard work he and his coaches have put in at West Ham and he has repaid them all by surging into the first team and grabbing the captain’s armband (when Mark Noble isn’t around).

Even though West Ham need him badly, you could argue that Manchester United need him even more.

For a number of years, critics have pointed at the Red Devils’ midfield as the major problem area which has seen their driest spell in decades.

Naturally, people began putting two and two together, linking Rice with a move to Old Trafford but only recently have these rumours started to gain traction.

Things have changed since then though, all of a sudden, the midfield duo of Scott McTominay and Fred are among United’s top players and attentions may turn elsewhere.
