David Moyes comments on West Ham defender Kurt Zouma

West Ham defender Kurt Zouma has not been picked for the France squad by Didier Deschamps for this week’s UEFA Nations League semi-final.

Zouma joined West Ham in the summer transfer window from Chelsea on a big-money transfer fee, and he has done well so far.

David Moyes is happy with the contributions the 26-year-old has made so far and has hailed his “incredible” qualities.

Often international managers have a big club bias and do not tend to pick players based on merit – Moyes has rejected that notion.

“I would hope not,” Moyes said to Football.London. “We are trying to challenge the top teams because I want to be right there at the top and those players can show they are good enough to play for the international teams.

“Kurt has played really really well for us. He’s been a colossus in the games he has played so his form will not go unnoticed.

“I think it is a Nations League game so maybe that is a reason for it. Maybe it is the quality of the centre-halves France have got.

“When I signed him I knew we were taking a French international centre-half [and they] have an incredible quality of centre-halves and he has not disappointed us from what we have seen so far.”

Zouma has made 10 international caps to his name and he has been a regular member of the France national set-up since 2018.

The former Chelsea defender was part of the France set-up for Euro 2020 and started in the last two international matches against Finland and Ukraine.

Therefore, the news of his absence from the Nations League squad has come as a bit of a shock considering he has been very impressive since moving to the London stadium.

As Moyes said, Zouma has been colossal at the back, and a leader as well. It’s really a shock that he has failed to impress his national team manager.

Having said that, his absence will come as a blessing in disguise as he will now get at least two weeks of proper rest ahead of West Ham’s trip to Goodison Park against Everton after the international break.

In other West Ham news, many Irons fans want to see one established player dropped after the international break.
