Many West Ham fans want David Moyes to start with Alphonse Areola - Journalist
Many West Ham fans are “clamouring” for Alphonse Areola to start in the Hammers’ next game against Everton in the Premier League.
David Moyes will return to his former club after the international break and according to Roshane Thomas of The Athletic, many Irons fans want Areola in goal instead of Lukasz Fabianski.
The 36-year-old has been the first-choice goalkeeper for the club since joining from Swansea City in the summer of 2018.
He has been very dependable in goal and barring some injury problems, the Polish keeper has been a constant presence in the first team.
Earlier this year, Moyes was full of praise for Fabianski hailing him as a “top” goalkeeper.
“There’s not a club in the country that doesn’t need a top goalkeeper, and we’re lucky that we have got one,” Moyes said in March.
“You’ve only got to look at Liverpool last year and how important the goalkeeper was, this year we’re talking about Manchester City’s keeper and how good he is.
“I think Lukasz is playing back to his best at the moment, his saves and the way he has been performing has been excellent.”
However, there is a feeling among a section of the fans that he was at fault for Yoane Wissa’s late goal as Brentford secured a 2-1 victory at the London Stadium on Sunday.
The Athletic claim that for the first time he is facing serious competition for the starting berth during his years at the club.
Areola has impressed for the Hammers since joining the club on loan from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
The 28-year-old made his senior debut for PSG in 2009 after emerging from the club’s academy. He has made 75 appearances to date and spent loan spells at various clubs including Villarreal, Real Madrid, Fulham and now West Ham.
The Frenchman has impressed in wins over Manchester United and Rapid Vienna outside of league games, keeping clean sheets in his two appearances.
His ball distribution has been fantastic and Moyes has a big decision to make regarding his selection ahead of the Everton clash.
