West Ham United player ratings vs Manchester United: Kalvin Phillips has 2/10 stinker

West Ham continued their winless start to 2024 with a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United in Sunday’s (4 February) Premier League contest.

The Irons fell to a couple of goals from Alejandro Garnacho and one from Rasmus Hojlund at Old Trafford to remain sixth in the table.

David Moyes’ side have now failed to win any of their six matches this calendar year in all competitions, losing two and drawing four of those.

West Ham Zone rates each West Ham player out of 10 after the disappointing loss in Manchester, using data supplied by WhoScored.

Alphonse Areola – 3

Took a heavy blow from Zouma and remained on the field for a bit before being replaced at half-time. If that was down to concussion, you have to wonder why the substitution was not made earlier? Would not have been happy to have been beaten by Hojlund from range.

Vladimir Coufal – 3

Could not get the ball forward and was also caught out a couple of times in a defensive sense. His passing accuracy of 81.8 per cent was among the worst of any West Ham starter and he was sacrificed in the second period.

Kurt Zouma – 4

A tough afternoon for the experienced centre-back, who made a team-high five clearances. Of the six duels he contested, the Frenchman won just one. Could have done better from at least one of the United goals and fluffed his lines from a chance at the other end.

Nayef Aguerd – 3

Turned his body for the second of United’s goals, which it goes without saying you just cannot do. Only registered one clearance – four fewer than Zouma alongside him – and is another who just did not look at it today.

Emerson – 3

Was involved in a nice piece of play in the first half, which ended with him getting his shot all wrong. That came minutes before United bagged a second to effectively kill off the game, earning him a low rating. Blows hot and cold far too often.

Edson Alvarez – 5

Played a couple of nice passes and won a big header at one point. Had a couple of sloppy moments, but he was not to blame for this disappointing loss.

Tomas Soucek – 3

Offered next to nothing in the West Ham engine room and was taken off in the second half. He lost possession six times, won just one of his three ground duels and had a paltry 36 touches of the ball. Far more is needed.

Ben Johnson – 5

Used in an attacking position and went close with a first-half effort. Was one of West Ham’s better performers as he looked to at least make something happen. Incredibly, he was used on both wings and at full-back, highlighting his versatility.

James Ward-Prowse – 5

No player on the field registered more key passes than Ward-Prowse’s four. His set-piece deliveries remain a real asset, but frustratingly failed to find the target from any of his two attempts.

Mohammed Kudus – 6

If anyone was going to get West Ham back into the game, it was going to be Kudus. Tested Andre Onana and also created a chance, making him just about the Hammers’ best performer on the day, which admittedly does not say a lot.

Jarrod Bowen – 4

Looked frustrated when his effort in the second half was blocked by Lisandro Martinez. Only had 27 touches of the ball and looked a little off the pace, particularly when taking too long over that aforementioned opportunity. Could do with having Lucas Paqueta back alongside him.

West Ham
Bruun Larsen could act as a replacement for Mohammed Kudus if he leaves West Ham this summer.

SUBS

Lukasz Fabianski (on for Alphonse Areola 46′) – 3

Was given a chance to stake a claim for a regular starting spot but was beaten by Garnacho and Hojlund.

Kalvin Phillips (on for Vladimir Coufal 72′) – 2

Was only named among the substitutes after making a howler on his debut against Bournemouth and was guilty of making another mistake after being brought on here. Was robbed on the halfway line by Scott McTominay and Garnacho went on to bag a second goal.

Maxwel Cornet (on for Tomas Soucek 72′) – 6

May only have had 20 minutes on the field, yet his three key passes were only bettered by Ward-Prowse. On the basis of this result, he may be handed a start in the next game.
