Why West Ham are ready to see the best of Edson Alvarez after missing out on Mexico horror show
Edson Alvarez has a point to prove to Mexico while at West Ham United.
The 28-year-old has certainly faced an up-and-down career since coming to the London Stadium.
His discipline has come under question regularly, while his performances have often left a lot to be desired.
There was an expectation that he would depart after relegation, or become a true asset in the Championship.
It had looked like the latter would be true after starting against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup to open the season.
Alvarez hasn't been seen since as his struggles were shown by a Mexico snub, but things could soon change.
Edson Alvarez surely keen to prove point to Mexico
Since 2017, the former Ajax man has been a regular for his country.
The midfielder has 103 El Tri caps to his name having featured across nine years for his country.
That extended into the World Cup as he featured four times before being knocked out by England.
The curtain then fell on Javier Aguirre's reign as manager before he was replaced by Rafa Marquez.
The ex-Barcelona defender decided to axe Alvarez from the squad for his opening international break in charge.
That decision hasn't paid off, with Marquez overseeing two draws and a defeat to begin his reign.
The most recent came to the USA as Mauricio Pochettino's side secured a 3-0 win at State Farm Stadium.
Alvarez will be keeping a close eye on the progress of the national team and questioning why he isn't playing a role.
That could give him the perfect fuel to light a fire in his belly, something which West Ham could be set to benefit from.
Alvarez has perfect chance to prove himself at West Ham
The 28-year-old should be able to take the Championship in his stride.
He hasn't been given a chance to do that, but with the right attitude, he could be set to have the perfect opportunity.
That comes courtesy of Mohamadou Kante and his red card away to Millwall last time around.
He simply had to take down Kyrell Lisbie as the forward went through one-on-one with Mads Hermansen.
There is now a gap in the squad at the base of midfield and Alvarez could take full advantage.
He needs to prove a point to Marquez, otherwise his international career could be over.
To stop that, he needs to start with some consistently excellent performances in claret and blue.
That could unlock the door to help West Ham finally see the best of Alvarez.
