Edson Alvarez is once again in the spotlight away from West Ham United.

The midfielder has had a tough time recently and was unable to secure a move away from the Hammers in the summer transfer window.

He had interested clubs abroad, with the likes of Ajax and FC Koln keen on signing him on a loan deal, but the Irons were stubborn on their financial demands.

Alvarez has only played once for Nuno Espirito Santo this season, which came in the Carabao Cup win over Portsmouth in August.

The Mexican international featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly over the international break, playing in the second half in a win over Wycombe Wanderers.

However, Alvarez is yet to play a single minute, and is once again in the media for controversial issues away from West Ham.

What is Edson Alvarez now being accused of?

In September, Alvarez released a statement to deny accusations that he was involved in the kidnapping of a film producer in his homeland.

Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez alleged he was forced into a vehicle at gunpoint in 2024 by the family of Alvarez's ex-father-in-law.

Alvarez' statement read: "I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me."

Now, according to a report from Estadio Deportes on Wednesday 21 October, Alvarez is the centre of accusations linking him to selling false COVID-19 vaccination certificates during the pandemic.

He and his ex-father-in-law, along with a doctor, have been accused of leading an "illicit network" of fake sales, allegedly charging over £350 per certificate.

The matter has recently gained relevance since several Mexican TV personalities have allegedly had access to these certificates.

It's said that authorities could launch an official investigation, and if the accusations were true, "severe legal implications" could follow, although the report does not suggest that a case has been opened yet.

Alvarez is yet to comment, and the report shares that the celebrities have yet to make a statement either.

How will this affect Alvarez and West Ham?

Simply put, the accusations will not help Alvarez's current situation.

He's already had a tough time with previous allegations against his name, which may have caused mental distress for the player.

Alvarez posted a photo of himself in training this week on Instagram, ahead of West Ham's game against Southampton on Saturday.

It's not yet known whether the midfielder will be involved i what is expected to be an important Championship clash.
