Edson Alvarez suffers 'major setback' away from West Ham after 'personal scandal'

West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez is enduring a tough time of things both on and off the field.

Alvarez failed to get a move away from the London Stadium, with teams supposedly priced out of a deal.

The Mexico international has yet to feature in any of the Hammers' six Championship matches under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Instead, his only outing since the World Cup came in the Carabao Cup tie against Portsmouth a month ago.

Nuno may now integrate Alvarez back into his side, prior to the transfer window reopening in January.

But the 28-year-old is now set for more disappointment away from West Ham.

Why Edson Alvarez is now set for Mexico snub

Alvarez would have been targeting the upcoming international break as a chance to play some football again.

However, that is now not going to happen.

As per David Faitelson on Mexican TV show Faitelson sin Censura, as carried by Marca, Alvarez will not be in new boss Rafael Marquez's first squad.

This is labelled a "first major setback" for Marquez, who has replaced Javier Aguirre in the Mexico dugout and was officially unveiled this week.

The reason for this is not because of his lack of minutes at club level since the World Cup.

Instead it is said to relate to a "personal scandal" Alvarez has been caught up in.

What drama has Alvarez been caught up in?

Alvarez released a statement on Thursday to deny accusations he was involved in the kidnapping of a film producer in his homeland.

Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez alleged he was bundled into a vehicle at gunpoint in 2024 by the family of Alvarez's ex-father-in-law.

Alvarez was alleged to have not been directly involved, but aware of the plans that were made.

In a statement, he has since said: "I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me."

It seems that the West Ham midfielder just cannot catch a break right now both on and off the field.
