West Ham United star Aaron Wan-Bissaka helped DR Congo pull off one of the all-time World Cup results against Portugal.

The 28-year-old is one of the star names in a DR Congo side making their first appearance at a World Cup in 52 years this summer.

Drawn in a group alongside Colombia, Uzbekistan and Portugal, many have been giving the Leopards little chance of progressing into the knockout rounds.

Forty-sixth in the FIFA world rankings, this Central African side had never scored a goal at the World Cup finals heading into the 2026 tournament.

However, that is no longer the case, as despite falling behind to Portugal after just six minutes on Wednesday night, Sebastien Desabre's side came roaring back.

Newcastle's Yoane Wissa scored a brilliant header to level the game at 1-1 just before half-time, and that's how things would stay until the final whistle.

What did Aaron Wan-Bissaka say after DR Congo vs Portugal?

Despite an onslaught of Portuguese pressure in the second half, DR Congo weathered the storm and even had a couple of chances to win it.

They will certainly take a draw against Roberto Martinez's team, who have a lot more to prove if they are to be serious contenders to win the World Cup.

On the other hand, those writing off DR Congo as having no chance to make it out of the groups will be wondering if they've spoken too soon.

For Wan-Bissaka and his teammates, the outside noise won't matter one bit, and the West Ham star has taken to his Instagram account to mark his and his nation's inspiring achievement.

"A milestone that makes both the team and the country proud," the Hammers defender said.

In response to that, his aforementioned teammate and goalscorer, Wissa, simply said: "Spider," which of course is a nod to his nickname of 'The Spider'.

Crysencio Summerville also left him the same response in the comments too, as he now looks ahead to making more history with his country in North America.

When are Wan-Bissaka and DR Congo's final group games?

Having already been one of the stories of this summer's World Cup after their long-awaited qualification for the tournament, DR Congo now have everyone's attention.

Following their draw with Portugal, Group K is now wide open heading into the final two matches, with Colombia sitting top on three points.

Indeed, it's the South Americans up next for DR Congo, who play Colombia in a 3am kick-off UK time on Wednesday 24 June.

The Leopards then finish their group stage campaign with a half-past midnight start against Uzbekistan on Sunday 28 June.

West Ham fans will certainly be paying increased attention to Wan-Bissaka's performances now, as he could certainly add a few digits to his price tag over the coming days.
