West Ham sources speak out on eyebrow-raising Jarrod Bowen call

West Ham United squandered a late chance to earn a point in Saturday's clash with Charlton Athletic.

After debutant Joel Piroe had pulled one back with 15 minutes to play, the Hammers were awarded a penalty.

Taty Castellanos stepped up in added time but hit the post with his effort from 12 yards.

The decision for Taty to take the spot-kick, and not skipper Jarrod Bowen, raised more than a few eyebrows.

Ally McCoist was "staggered" Bowen did not take the pen - and so were the vast majority inside the London Stadium.

A report has now shared the reason behind that decision from Nuno Espirito Santo.

Why didn't Jarrod Bowen take West Ham penalty?

Speaking after the match, Nuno rather bizarrely said he is not sure who West Ham's penalty taker is.

The Athletic's Roshane Thomas has now reported, via sources, that it was agreed Bowen would not take West Ham's next pen after he missed against Leeds United in the FA Cup quarter-finals in April.

That decision is said to have been agreed behind the scenes, with Taty instead getting the nod for West Ham's first pen since then.

This was the striker's first penalty since missing for Lazio against Empoli in October 2024.

It is not known who will take the next spot-kick awarded to the Irons, but the pressure will well and truly be on.

What is Bowen's overall penalty record for West Ham?

Bowen may have missed in the FA Cup, but he scored two pens from two in the Premier League last season.

Lucas Paqueta, who has since moved on, also scored two from two as the pair shared duties.

Overall, Bowen has scored nine and missed three, so it is far from an ideal record but certainly not terrible.

As for Taty, he has scored 15 and now missed four, which is also far from ideal.

If Nuno has any sense, he will get his players practicing pens at Rush Green this week and come to a conclusion as to who will take them regularly this campaign.
