West Ham must avoid costly Jonathan David swoop as Premier League interest builds

West Ham United are among three Premier League clubs eyeing up Juventus striker Jonathan David.

David, who moved to Turin as a free agent in July 2025, has endured a difficult few months in Serie A and often been linked with a move to England at the end of the season.

Nuno Espirito Santo is believed to be on the hunt for a new forward despite splashing out around £50million on Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe, and a shortlist has been drawn up.

Judging by recent reports, Canadian international David is among West Ham's targets, while the East London club are also said to have pushed for his signature last summer.

Speculation over David's future has been rife after he was dropped to Juventus' bench for their 1-0 win against Udinese on Saturday, with the ace brought on in the 92nd minute.

Since joining from Lille, the frontman has scored just seven times across all competitions, while in Serie A, he has registered five goals in 1,222 minutes - a dire return.

Despite this, he has once again been linked with West Ham by Italian outlet Tuttosport, who have also claimed that Nottingham Forest tried to sign him in the January transfer window.

Tottenham were previously keen on David, and it has been suggested that they could soon reignite their interest, potentially handing the Hammers stern competition.

All three Premier League clubs have been described as "on alert" over the possible deal, with Juventus very much open to listening to offers just one year after recruiting him.

This stance, though, should be ringing the alarm bells at the London Stadium, especially with Niclas Fullkrug set to return from AC Milan at the end of his loan spell.

West Ham should avoid transfer mistake

Juventus stand to make a handsome profit on David either way, with his current price tag a mystery. They could well demand around £30million, but this would be daylight robbery.

He had shone in Ligue 1, but even there, his output dropped year on year.

Indeed, he scored 24 goals in 2022-23 before notching a reduced tally of 19 the following campaign. Last year, this was reduced again to 16, showcasing a gradual decline in form.

David was an attractive proposition as a free agent, but splashing out on him is a different matter. West Ham are in financial dire straits and certainly can't afford to be wasting money.

They also need guaranteed goals and a striker on whom they can hang their hat, but the Canadian ticks neither of those boxes and isn't ready to take on the burden.
