West Ham United are embarrassing after David Moyes developments
Frank McAvennie has branded West Ham United “disrespectful” for their treatment of David Moyes and says he is “ashamed” of the club.
Moyes’ upcoming departure was confirmed officially by the Hammers on 6 May – but speculation regarding his replacement had been rife in the weeks beforehand.
Talks between the club and Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim were shared, while reports of an agreement with Julen Lopetegui surfaced before the official communication on Moyes’ future.
Frank McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – revealed his frustrations with how the club have handled the departure of a manager who has served the Hammers well.
“I hope [there will be a massive send-off for David Moyes]. I really hope so, he deserves everything he gets,” he said. “I’m so ashamed of West Ham at the moment, because of what’s happened [with Moyes]. The fact of the matter is, West Ham could have done it differently.
“Why is it that other clubs speak to people and it’s never in the papers, but when West Ham speak to somebody, it’s all over the place.
“I think it’s so disrespectful to the manager that’s in there now. No matter whether people want him to stay or not – everyone’s got their own idea of that.
“I didn’t like the way they’ve played football, but I would want David to stay. But his defence – for someone who relies on the defence, it’s been awful. But it doesn’t matter what I think, what anyone thinks – what the club have done to him… Even though he says, ‘I’m leaving’, have a bit of respect and speak to someone. You don’t have to go over the papers.
“Getting a guy [Amorim] in a private jet – it’s embarrassing. And now they’ve got this other guy apparently, who’s coming in who was at Wolves [Julen Lopetegui]. I don’t know if the fans will accept that.”
Will West Ham fans accept Julen Lopetegui?
As poorly as David Sullivan and the West Ham board have handled the departure of a manager who saved the club from relegation twice, delivered regular European football and won the club’s first trophy in decades, the majority of Hammers supporters appear to agree that change is necessary.
Their immediate concern will be the nature of his expected replacement in Lopetegui, with few fans seeming especially enamoured with their prospective new head coach.

The Spaniard was closing in on a move to AC Milan before fan backlash saw the Rossoneri retract their interest. The ill feeling among West Ham supporters is less intense, but Lopetegui certainly has plenty to prove if he does succeed Moyes.
