Pundit would understand if Jarrod Bowen left West Ham United amid Newcastle United transfer interest

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie wouldn’t be surprised to see Jarrod Bowen leave West Ham amid reported interest from Newcastle in a summer transfer.

Bowen has been one of the Hammers’ stand-out performers in recent years, but has had a more subdued season this year with eight goals and four assists in 40 appearances.

That hasn’t stopped him being linked with an exit again, with the Magpies interested in a summer transfer, but McAvennie thinks he should focus on playing well regularly for West Ham instead of moving elsewhere.

“It depends who comes in for him,” he said. “He’s starting to play well again. Is that because we’re coming to the end of the season and he wants to move? Or is it just because we’re playing a certain way?

“Because I look at Bowen, Benrahma, Fornals, and they’ve not been playing well. They don’t look happy.

“You don’t know whether to blame the players or the manager. I just can’t understand why such good players aren’t doing it anymore like they did last year.

“I can understand Bowen moving, because Liverpool wanted him last year. The last couple of games he’s started to play well again, but I don’t care what anyone says you’ve got to play [well] every week for your club.”

Bowen was linked with a move away to Arsenal and Liverpool last summer after hitting 17 goals and registering 13 assists in 50 appearances.

But his form dropped off this season which saw him miss out on a spot in the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar in November and December.
