Pundit wants West Ham United to sign player to walk into starting lineup

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham need to sign players who will walk straight into their starting lineup in January, according to Frank McAvennie.

The Hammers signed eight players in the January transfer window but currently sit one point above the relegation zone after ten defeats in 16 Premier League games so far this season.

Poor form and injuries have led to speculation that David Moyes could look to enter the market for up to four players in January, but McAvennie feels they only need to sign players for the lineup and not more squad options, although he doesn’t foresee a busy January.

“They’ve bought a lot of squad players, it’s not players who are going to walk into the team,” he told West Ham Zone.

“And West Ham need someone who is going to come in and go into the team. They don’t need another squad player.

“One for the future, they don’t need one for the future anymore. Because over the years they’ve bought loads for the future and it’s not materialised. They need players to come in and challenge the first-team.

“The squad will change but I don’t think West Ham will buy anyone in January, but I’ve been wrong before.”

Reports suggest that West Ham want to sign a right-back, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka linked, while a centre-back could be on the shortlist if Craig Dawson moves on as expected.

Another midfielder is also wanted with the futures of Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek in the air, while a striker to help their lack of goals is also a target with Youssef En-Nesyri reportedly top of the wishlist for David Moyes.
