Pundit reacts as West Ham linked with loan bid for PSG star Georginio Wijnaldum
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie would be delighted to see West Ham sign PSG midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum during the January transfer window.
Wijnaldum, 31, only joined the Ligue 1 giants during the summer after seeing his contract expire at Liverpool.
However, despite featuring 21 times for PSG this season, the Netherlands international has failed to nail down a regular spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI.

That’s led to reports that he is seeking a move away from France in January, with online news outlet 90min claiming last week (9 December) that the Irons had been in contact over a potential loan move.
After hearing the speculation, McAvennie gleefully told West Ham Zone: “He’s a big player, I just can’t believe West Ham are getting linked in the same breath as this boy because he’s a wonderful talent.
“If West Ham could get him he would be a great addition to the squad.
“I don’t know where he would play, with [Declan] Rice and [Tomas] Soucek in midfield. Maybe he would play Soucek’s role with Rice, or perhaps they could change to play a three in midfield.”

Pedigree
Wijnaldum counts a Premier League title and Champions League trophy among the honours he lifted while at Liverpool, with the midfielder also a key component of the Netherlands side that qualified for the 2022 World Cup in November.
He joined Liverpool in 2016 after spending the 2015/16 campaign at Newcastle United and in seven Premier League seasons, Wijnaldum scored 27 goals and supplied 16 assists.
In other West Ham news, Jim White claims the Irons want to sign this 22-year-old South American centre-forward.
