Pundit: Moyes to get Nat Phillips ‘sorted’ as West Ham plot January move for Liverpool defender

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie backs David Moyes to get the best out of Nathaniel Phillips if he leaves Liverpool for West Ham in January.

Phillips, 24, has previously been linked with a move to the London Stadium but the Evening Standard reported on Wednesday (8 December) that the Irons were considering a January loan move for the 6ft3in central defender.

He starred for the Reds on Tuesday (7 December) as Jurgen Klopp’s side beat AC Milan 2-1 in San Siro but that was only the Bolton-born defender’s third appearance of the 2021/22 campaign.

That’s despite earning considerable praise for his heroics last season, with Jamie Redknapp hailing him as “unbelievable” after scoring in a 3-0 win over Burnley at the back end of last season (19 May, Sky Sports via LancsLive).

After being linked with a move to West Ham this week, ex-Irons star McAvennie told West Ham Zone: “He’s not going to get into the Liverpool team, there’s not a chance of that.

“He’s 24, a good age for a centre-back. David Moyes will get him sorted.”

Phillips looks likely to be sold in January if he pushes for a move.

He was kept around for the first half of the season amid doubts over Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez following their returns from lengthy injury lay-offs.

However, the trio are all fit now and, alongside summer signing Ibrahima Konate, are ahead of Phillips in the centre-back pecking order.

In other West Ham news, MPs were ‘stunned into silence’ after what was said about the Irons in Parliament on Tuesday.
