Pundit: David Moyes should stay on as West Ham United manager if they win Europa Conference League final v Fiorentina

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

David Moyes should be given the opportunity to stick around as West Ham manager if they win the Europa Conference League, according to Frank McAvennie.

The Hammers will face off against Serie A side Fiorentina on Wednesday night in Prague, where a win will give the club their first trophy in over 40 years and Moyes the first of his career.

But after admitting that fans are likely to still want the manager to leave even if he is successful, McAvennie believes he should stay on for next season if he can navigate a “miraculous” cup win considering the season they have had.

West Ham

“I think West Ham will beat them, and I think David will be there next year because he’s done everything that we wanted him to.

“It’s a bad season for him in the league, but it’s a tremendous season for him in Europe. We’ll go up the table now and finish 14th or 15th, then give him another year. Give him another go, especially if he wins.

He deserves that. He deserves it anyway. If we’d been relegated I’d have said no, no, no but he’s been outstanding.

West Ham

“I just think he needs to take some weight off the players and let them go and express themselves. I’ll be delighted for everyone at West Ham if they do it. It would be superb. Nothing short of miraculous considering this season.”

Moyes has been linked with the Celtic manager’s job after Ange Postecoglou agreed terms (The Sun) to take over at Tottenham, although he denied those links last week and claimed he wasn’t thinking of anything beyond the final.

It was also reported that he could be sacked if he loses the final to Fiorentina, with the board still not convinced after the poor domestic campaign.
