Pundit backs Michail Antonio to be starting striker for West Ham United despite Arnaut Danjuma links
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie isn’t convinced Arnaut Danjuma is good enough for West Ham and has backed Michail Antonio to continue as the number one striker next season.
The Hammers were linked with a £43m move for the Dutch forward from Villarreal [Daily Mail, July 3], as they look to bolster their attack ahead of the new season to improve upon their 7th placed finish in the 2021/22 season.
But McAvennie admitted he didn’t know much about the player, but claimed any player can look good on video and said he still sees Jamaican international Antonio as the “number one” striker for David Moyes.

“I don’t know much about him, but to be honest with you it’s quite good because normally you hear everything about players before we’ve even made a bid,” he told West Ham Zone.
“And then everyone goes and Googles him. In the videos that you’ll see, you’ll never see a bad video of any player.
“Agents take them, if there’s any bad misses the agents will take them off the net. So if somebody hands in a video to a manager it’s always going to be good. So you may have a look at them.
“Do I think we need a striker? Yes. People were comparing, saying nobody is going to come in at Spurs because of Harry Kane. He’s going to be number one, and it’s the same with Antonio.
“But Antonio gets injured quite a bit and he could do, we saw last year, he could do with a break. So I would like another striker. It’s great for competition as well, but it’s great for cover and it’s just not a better place to play than for West Ham.”
