Frank McAvennie reacts after West Ham manager David Moyes admits Scotland dream

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie predicts David Moyes to be at West Ham in 2024 despite his recent admission that he would like to manage the Scotland national team.

The Scot told BBC Sportsround [11/07/21] that he was now interested in managing his country, suggesting his stance had changed from previous years.

Moyes said: “I think at the right time, when things are right for me and if it’s right for Scotland, then it might be a consideration.”

However, former West Ham forward McAvennie has told supporters not to worry, believing it will be a long time until Moyes vacates his spot at the London Stadium.

“Not yet,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “Steve [Clarke] is not going anywhere.

“David Moyes has got a three-year contract. One thing about David is he’s an honourable guy so he will finish that contract he’s on.

“Who knows, West Ham might be terrible this year and they won’t want him for another three years! Football is a weird sport.

“Would David want to take Scotland on? Of course he would. But not yet.

“When the time is right, he can do it.”

Plenty of time

Moyes may be a senior figure within football, but he’s still only 58-year-old and he has plenty of miles left in the tank.

International management is often regarded as a prelude to retirement, and thus it is usually avoided until the latter years of a manager’s career.

We can’t see Moyes taking over Scotland or any other national side in the near future as he likes to be hands-on and involved every day, something international management wouldn’t allow him to do.

Furthermore, it looks like he is enjoying life in east London.

He has well and truly won over any doubters after a sensational 2020/21 campaign that saw the Irons clinch sixth-place and a spot in the Europa League.

The sky is the limit for him at West Ham, and he isn’t going anywhere for a long time.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are in talks to sign this player who could be a mainstay for Moyes next season.
