Frank McAvennie expects West Ham to challenge for Champions League qualification
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has backed West Ham to compete for the Champions League positions in the 2021/22 Premier League campaign.
The Irons finished in sixth place last season, a huge turnaround from the previous campaign where they battled against relegation and ended up 16th in table.
Despite a quiet transfer window so far, McAvennie believes there is now a marked difference in the club’s approach to signings with David Moyes at the helm.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I’m expecting them to fight again this year for the Champions League.
“Definitely a European spot anyway as the owners are letting David Moyes buy his own players which is such a breath of fresh air, because he’s not bad at picking a player.”

That’s certainly an optimistic shout from the former Irons forward, and one we struggle to go along with at this present juncture.
So far, only Alphonse Areola has been brought in as a fresh face at the London Stadium, and we go into Sunday’s Premier League opener versus Newcastle United with a weaker squad than we started last season with.
We have not replaced centre-forward Sebastien Haller since he left for Ajax in January while Manchester United loan star Jesse Lingard has not returned to east London.
It feels fanciful to suggest we can compete with the likes of moneybags Manchester United and Chelsea until we make more signings.
In other West Ham news, the club have made an approach to sign this ex-Irons trialist from a Premier League rival.
