Dr Dan: Few good seasons will not make West Ham fans mend ties with GSB

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at West Ham...

West Ham fans are more likely to forgive their owners if they’re more transparent about what is going on at the club.

That’s according to Dr Dan Plumley, who claims that a few good seasons will not suddenly make the Hammers faithful warm up to the GSB.

Despite wanting to strengthen in multiple key areas, the club failed to sign anyone in the January transfer window.

To address that issue, among other things, fan group Hammers United requested a meeting with Daniel Kretinsky.

The Czech millionaire recently bought a minority stake in the club with the aim to complete a full takeover in the future.

Discussing the possible reasons for wanting this meeting, the Sheffield Hallam University expert said, “Short-term performances drive things and certainly, results are front and centre of that.

Over time, if the fans don’t feel that they’re being valued or being heard, then a proportion of them will be upset by that.

Moving forward, even if you are a millionaire or a billionaire, from the new guy coming, fans still want that transparency.

If you make fans feel a part of things then you’re better placed if performances do dip.

Signing three or four players every window is not realistic, but you can build that relationship with fans if you’re transparent.”

Hammers United was established after relations between fans and David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady were at an all-time low after the move to the London Stadium.

Per Hammers News, they currently have a member base of around 18,500 people.
