Mads Hermansen woeful, Taty Castellanos a bright spark – West Ham player ratings vs Newcastle United

Mads Hermansen and Taty Castellanos had two contrasting evenings for West Ham United against Newcastle.

West Ham started terribly at St James’ Park, going 2-0 down after just 18 minutes played. Matters were then compounded in the second half when William Osula netted his second of the game in the 65th minute.

Taty Castellanos produced an exceptional volley out of nowhere to trim the deficit, but by that point, it was too little too late.

The Irons’ Premier League status now looks to be in real danger, with Nuno Espirito Santo banking on a Chelsea win against Tottenham to provide any hope.

Ultimately, in West Ham versus Newcastle, the overall performances from the squad were simply not good enough, with one player sticking out terribly and another having at least some credit.

Mads Hermansen mistake costs West Ham in relegation battle

West Ham would have known that coming to St James’ Park was a tricky test for them, but being their own worst enemy was the last thing they needed.

For Mads Hermansen, that is exactly what occurred. The Danish goalkeeper made an error leading to a goal for the Geordies’ opener and was left in no man’s land for the two other strikes.

Additionally, his ball-playing was far from ideal, leaving the match with just 48 per cent accuracy.

He did end up picking up an assist, but not thanks to his own qualities and more so to an outrageous attempt from Taty Castellanos.

While he has been the Hammers’ saviour on multiple occasions, this time, it was the complete opposite, and relegation looks almost certain for the E20 outfit now.

Taty Castellanos a bright spark on a poor evening for West Ham

When it came to West Ham’s forwards, Castellanos stuck out like a sore thumb and in all the right ways.

The Argentine was dogged in his battles and never looked to give up despite the scoreline put in front of him.

His volley to provide an inkling of hope was utterly sensational, and on another day, he could have scored plenty more for the Irons.

The striker ended the game with eight attempts, four of them on target. He was constantly winning his battles against the centre-backs, winning five out of five aerial duels.

Questions will certainly be asked of Nuno Espirito Santo as to why he did not start the game, as he could have made an impact sooner than his 26th-minute introduction.
