West Ham Women to sign USA star Kristie Mewis with announcement due within days

West Ham Women are set to complete the signing of U.S. women’s national team international Kristie Mewis from Gotham FC, according to The Athletic.

The online news outlet reported [20 December] that the 32-year-old midfielder is expected to be the Hammers’ first signing of the January transfer window, with an official announcement expected later this week.

West Ham are in much need of reinforcements as they sit second-bottom in the Women’s Super League, having won just five points from 10 games and have a goal difference of minus 13 so far.

A promising transfer

Mewis has been a sensation for Gotham since being drafted from San Diego Wave for a fee of £158,852. She played a vital role as Gotham won the 2023 NWSL Championships, making 14 appearances.

This was following a tough 2023 at club level, having missed many games to being at the World Cup and suffering from a lower leg injury but has been in fine form since returning.

Mewis’ experience is evidence enough as to why West Ham have brought the midfielder to London as they look to move away from bottom-of-the-league Bristol City, who are only below the Hammers due to goal difference.

West Ham

Although she has not been known for her goal contributions in recent seasons, Mewis’ experience at a high level will be the right mindset to help West Ham turn their fortunes around this campaign, who have only scored eight goals in the league so far.

The midfielder has been capped 53 times with US. The move will also represent her second spell in European football, spending the 2015/16 campaign on loan with Bayern Munich.

Only six points separate West Ham in 11th and Everton in seventh, and the transfer of Mewis could make all the difference heading into the second half of the season.
