West Ham United Women share Jess Ziu injury update ahead of new WSL season

West Ham United Women have confirmed that Jess Ziu has picked up an ACL injury in a behind-closed-door clash ahead of the WSL season.

The Hammers confirmed via X on Saturday (24 August) that the 22-year-old is set to undergo surgery before beginning a period of recovery at Chadwell Heath as she looks to return to action sooner rather than later.

While no timescale has yet been shared for Ziu’s return, it seems likely that she could be set for an extended spell having previously spent 13 months sidelined with a previous knee injury.

The Ireland international made 16 WSL appearances for Rehane Skinner’s side last season, laying on a single assist from the middle of the park.

West Ham United Women injury update emerges

Ziu has to be one of the most unfortunate players in this current West Ham squad. The Ireland international has now picked up two ACL injuries in the space of just two years which is a massive blow to her and the Irons themselves.

West Ham had only handed the Irish international a new contract in June as they looked to build around her this season, but this latest injury issue will almost certainly mean that she misses the majority of the WLS campaign.

Whether or not this could spark Skinner’s side into life during the summer transfer window remains to be seen. Supporters will hope that the Hammers do what they can to replace the 22-year-old before the transfer window slams shut.

The Irons have undergone a major rebuild having narrowly avoided the drop into the Women’s Championship last term, with serval players leaving at the end of their contracts and a handful of new arrivals being secured.

Hopefully, Ziu will make a full recovery quickly. Until then, it would be good to see West Ham get some plans in place quickly to provide some cover for the 22-year-old.
