West Ham United Women make Shelina Zadorsky transfer announcement after Tottenham exit

West Ham United Women have confirmed the signing of Canadian international Shelina Zadorsky ahead of the new WSL season.

The Hammers confirmed via their website on Monday (19 August) that the 31-year-old had put pen to paper on a one-year deal in East London after her contract with Tottenham expired at the end of last season.

Zadorsky spent six months on loan with the Irons last term and played a crucial role in the backline as Rehane Skinner’s side dodged the drop and the West Ham boss is excited to have secured her services permanently.

As quoted by West Ham (19 August) she said: “I am delighted to extend Shelina’s time at West Ham, following a very successful loan spell during the second half of last season.

“Shelina has a wealth of experience across the domestic and international game, having made over 100 appearances for Canada and represented her country at a third Olympic Games in Paris this summer, which is a remarkable feat for any player.

“Shelina has a fantastic attitude and a desire to win that carries through the team. She is versatile across the left-hand side of the backline and her technical ability on the ball is a real strength to her game.

“I have no doubt Shelina will continue to help us evolve our style of play and we all look forward to having her back in the group as a permanent Hammer.”

Are West Ham United Women close to any new signings in the transfer window?

The Hammers were always going to have to be active between now and the end of the transfer window and while there is still more work to be done, this feels like an excellent permanent addition to Skinner’s squad.

During her loan spell in East London, the defender played a major role in the Irons’ survival bid and while she wasn’t perfect, West Ham may not have stayed up without her as the 31-year-old played her part in vital wins over Bristol City and Arsenal.

Hopefully, she will have a similar impact on a permanent basis this season as the Hammers are going to have another battle to avoid the drop given the massive overhaul of the playing squad over the course of the summer.

The only slightly concerning part of this deal is the fact that Zadorsky has only put pen to paper on a one-year contract.

Skinner’s side will probably look to extend that further if and when they confirm their place in the WSL for another year.
