Riko Ueki makes ‘lucky’ admission after what happened in West Ham Women draw v Liverpool

West Ham United women’s star Riko Ueki has admitted she was “lucky” to score in the Irons’ draw with Liverpool as she didn’t see the ball go in.

Rehanne Skinner’s side picked up their first point of the Women’s Super League season with a 1-1 draw at the Chigwell Construction Stadium on Sunday (29 September).

Although the Hammers left it late to find a way back into the game, Ueki was quick to suggest that the improved performance demonstrated the consistency that they had been searching for at the start of the season.

As quoted by West Ham’s website (29 September) she said: I’m so happy to help the team get our first point of the season.

“I seem to really like scoring against Liverpool, and my goal today was a little bit lucky as I didn’t actually see it go in.

We lost the goal early on, but as a team, we were able to keep going and keep being consistent. We needed more consistency after [losing 3-0] last weekend against Manchester United and we did that.

“I’m really pleased that we were able to get the point for the fans. There were lots of them here, including some Japanese fans too. I’m thankful for their support today.”

Will West Ham United women avoid relegation from the WSL this season?

West Ham supporters won’t care that Ueki didn’t manage to see the ball cross the line as that goal and the point that it secured could well be vital in the Hammers’ bid to avoid relegation from the WSL this season.

Each and every point will matter and the Irons should be able to take plenty of momentum from their late draw with the Reds on Sunday into their Women’s League Cup clash with Portsmouth on Wednesday (2 October).

While the priority simply has to be the league this term, Skinner will be desperate to see her side pick up a first domestic win of the season. Whether it’s in the cup or the league, winning is an excellent habit to get into.

It was never going to be an easy season in East London after a summer where there were several major changes to the playing staff, but this team showed the desire against Liverpool that they will need to be successful this term.
