‘First team, now’ – These West Ham fans urge Moyes to call up U23 talent ‘ASAP’

West Ham fans are urging David Moyes to put young striker Xande Silva into the first team straight away.

The 22-year-old was on the scoresheet for the Hammers’ U23s on Sunday, finding the back of the net with a fine effort from 25 yards to help his side complete a late turnaround against Sunderland.

The Portuguese youth international was making his return from a lengthy absence that began with emergency stomach surgery last summer, and marked his substitute appearance in style with a stunning long range strike.

And supporters are convinced that he is ready for a step up to the senior side.

To be fair, at this present moment in time, West Ham need all the help they can get up top.

Sebastien Haller hasn’t scored since New Year’s Day, and while he provides a vital physical presence, as exemplified by his average of 7.5 aerial duels won per game [Whoscored], he could really do with somebody who can get in and around the chaos he creates to capitalise on chances.

Silva could well be that player. Not only is he a physical presence in his own right, with a turn of pace that frightens defenders, but he is also an intelligent reader of the game with an impressive ability to finish the most difficult of opportunities, as illustrated by his goal yesterday.

His lengthy spell on the sidelines may have delayed his progression in east London, but now he’s back, he could really kick on and fly.
