West Ham United announce ‘extra special’ new contract for player
West Ham United have tied down youth prospect Tyron Akpata to a new contract at the London Stadium, as confirmed by the club’s official website.
Speaking to whufc.com [4 July], 17-year-old Akpata described the feeling as “extra special” to sign professionally with the Irons after progressing through the youth ranks for a number of years.
The midfielder was part of the league and FA Youth Cup double-winning West Ham side of 2023, and will form part of his boyhood club’s Under-21 setup this season.
Akpata said: “It’s a great feeling to sign this contract, and I’m so chuffed to start a new chapter at West Ham United as a professional footballer.
“I’ve been here for a few years now, which does make it extra special. I’ve worked under some different coaches, who have all helped me massively with my development, and I hope I can continue growing in the future.
“It was really nice to see George Earthy and Kaelan Casey get given a chance last season, and that does help give you belief about what could happen in the future. I’m just going to give everything I’ve got for this club.”
West Ham United looking after young talent
Despite the well-recognised West Ham recruitment drive for first-team stars as Tim Steidten heads up a team to build Julen Lopetegui a competing squad, the club have given chances to many of their youngsters down the years.
Earthy in particular made an excellent impact towards the end of last season, becoming a Premier League goalscorer against Luton Town in the twilight of David Moyes’ tenure in East London.
Several of those who have not quite made the grade at the club have gone on to excel in the EFL, including current Sunderland pair Aji Alese and Pierre Ekwah, as well as Charlton Athletic’s Conor Coventry.

Divin Mubama could be the next on that list after his release by the club over the summer, with a high level of interest in the starlet striker.
As for Akpata, a new dawn beckons for him with the Hammers and last season’s U18 captain has time on his side.
In other West Ham news, sources close to Lucas Paqueta have discussed his potential of returning to Flamengo.
