West Ham loanee Freddie Potts ready to step up after official announcement
Freddie Potts has impressed on loan at Wycombe Wanderers this season and David Moyes should be eager to reward him once he returns to West Ham.
Having joined the League One outfit on a temporary deal last summer, the 20-year-old has made 43 appearances in all competitions, notching two goals and two assists, and gaining valuable experience.
Potts has only made three senior appearances at the London Stadium since graduating from the club’s academy, though Moyes – providing he is still at the club – might want to up his minutes with the youngster’s loan deal soon coming to an end.
The Londoners are set for a revamp this summer, with new players and even a new manager after their form has tailed off since the start of the year.
West Ham’s midfield is one of the aspects of the squad that needs more depth, and Potts could very much take a spot on the bench, especially once Kalvin Philipps’ loan deal expires.
Edson Alvarez is the only natural defensive midfielder in the squad, other than Phillips, while Tomas Soucek and James Ward-Prowse take turns staying back while the other attacks.
Potts certainly has the ability to fill in alongside Alvarez next season, and even more so after Wycombe announced on Thursday [25 April] that the young midfielder had been named 2023/24 Supporters’ Player of the Year.
Can Freddie Potts stamp his mark at West Ham United?
The 20-year-old will certainly feel there is a case to be made for him to be given a first-team opportunity next season and should be considered during preseason.
At such a young age, Moyes may need to put aside his need for experience and put his trust in the youth players being developed by the Hammers, with very few prospects being given a chance.
Of course, George Earthy has broken through into the senior team and looks to be a real talent. But other than him, the likes of Lewis Orford and Kaelan Casey have not been trusted to feature yet.
Wycombe fans will be able to tell the Scot exactly what the Hammers are missing out on if Potts is not given a proper opportunity next season.
In other West Ham news, the club have been handed a major boost in appointing David Moyes’ replacement as a manager has made his future intentions clear.
