Why Lewis Orford deserves West Ham role as Nils Koppen to make loan calls
Lewis Orford won't know if he's leaving West Ham United on loan this summer for a little while yet.
With pre-season now under way, Nuno Espirito Santo will be finalising his squad plans ahead of a big Premier League promotion push in 2026-27.
Nobody connected with the Hammers will be content with anything less than an instant return to the top flight, and so the pressure is on transfer chiefs to sign the right players and Nuno and his side to deliver results.
It remains to be seen how much faith Nuno places in youth next season, as youngster's like Orford will be hoping relegation coincides with their best first-team chances at the London Stadium yet.
The 20-year-old midfielder has been with West Ham since the age of five, and has long been tipped for eventual stardom in the senior side.
But he hasn't yet been able to make the evolution to the first-team on a consistent basis, and he's now faced with a potential make or break pre-season at the London Stadium.
When Lewis Orford will learn of his West Ham loan fate
West Ham Zone has been tracking Orford's success in West Ham's youth ranks for some time.
He was granted a short loan spell away from E20 last season, as he joined League One outfit Stevenage on loan initially for the duration of the 2025-26 campaign.
Unfortunately, his loan was terminated in late November after making just three appearances, in which he scored once and provided two assists.
And now, according to a report from The Athletic, West Ham's new director of player recruitment Nils Koppen has told the Club's youngsters that they will need to wait another two weeks before any decisions are reached on loan exits.
It's stated that Nuno wishes to use the upcoming pre-season friendlies as the perfect opportunity to see if any academy talents standout, and thus potentially win a place in his first-team plans.
Orford is explicitly named in the report as one of the main young talents who will have the chance to impress Nuno this summer, and he shouldn't have a hard time doing so given his academy exploits last term.
How Orford was among Premier League 2's best in 2025-26
After returning from his aforementioned loan spell with Stevenage, Orford headed straight back into playing Premier League 2 (PL2) football with West Ham.
In total, the England youth international played and started 12 times in that league in 2025-26, scoring three goals and registering two assists to boot.
However, it's his underlying numbers that highlight just how good the defensive midfielder was at that level, and why he's already surely earned an extended first-team opportunity at West Ham for next season.
As per FotMob, Orford ranked in the top three per cent of all PL2 defensive midfielders last season for shots (30), successful crosses (15) and chances created (27) respectively.
He also ranked in the leading 2.4 percentile for his 14 shots on target and his 92 recoveries, as well as placing in the top 4.2 per cent for his 50 accurate long balls respectively.
In short, there were very few players in his position putting up better numbers in many key areas than Orford in English football's highest level of academy football last season.
So, if there's any Hammers youngster who is ready to make his mark in the senior side, it's surely Orford.
