Whispers emerge from West Ham United as £18m Callum Wilson January deal on the cards
West Ham are interested in a possible £18million deal to sign Newcastle striker Callum Wilson, as whispers from the club have suggested they would prefer not to spend big on a striker, according to Sports Lens.
The sports news outlet reported on 25 January that the Hammers could be tempted to consider the deal after seriously looking at new striker options, with Wilson fitting the bill should they opt to sign a proven forward.
Having been linked with a £35million move to sign Chelsea striker Armando Broja, and a possible £50million bid for Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface [Alan Nixon, 21 January], Wilson would represent more of an affordable option.
A fantastic addition to the squad
If West Ham want to sign a new striker in January, with Michail Antonio and Danny Ings failing to impress when selected for the role, the Newcastle hitman provides potentially the best option.
His experience in the Premier League will be tempting for David Moyes, and with seven goals from 14 league appearances so far this season, his record is a significant upgrade on that of the current strikers at the London Stadium.
However, there are likely to be some reservations surrounding Wilson’s patchy injury record, given the stress blows to Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio have caused the Hammers in the past month.

Another concern could be his age. At 31 years old, he wouldn’t exactly represent a long-term option at the London Stadium, and while he may fit the profile as far as Moyes is concerned, he goes against the style of move targeted by Tim Steidten so far this season.
In other West Ham news, a star player would be happy to quit East London in the summer.
