Where Mateus Fernandes ranks among West Ham’s most expensive ever signings
Mateus Fernandes has finally completed his move to West Ham.
Fernandes, 21, is one of the few players from that Southampton side last season who impressed, with the youngster ending the campaign with two goals and four assists as an attacking midfielder in the Premier League.
A deal has been agreed to bring Fernandes to West Ham, which will cost the Hammers around £38million plus add-ons.
In what will be a welcome addition to Graham Potter’s side, Fernandes has become one of West Ham’s most expensive players in their rich history.

Mateus Fernandes becomes West Ham’s third-most expensive player of all time
It is clear from Jarrod Bowen’s confrontation with supporters after the loss to Wolves that the general feeling around the East London outfit is a negative one.
Those who attend the London Stadium on a regular basis will be hoping that Fernandes can inject some life into this dismal West Ham side that have lost their opening three matches.
- West Ham have continued their disastrous form into the new season
- The Hammers have conceded eight goals in their opening three matches
- One of Potter’s biggest issues currently is not having enough legs in his midfield, with players such as James Ward-Prowse being outrun by the opposition this season.
With add-ons ensuring that the deal could rise to over £40million, the Portuguese playmaker is the third most expensive signing in West Ham’s 130-year history.
Second on the list is flop forward Sebastian Haller, who cost £45m in 2019, while Lucas Paqueta leads the way with a £51m fee.
What has Fernandes said about joining West Ham?
Potter will be hoping the Portugal Under-21 international hits the ground running in order to help the former Chelsea manager turn things around in East London.
Despite Potter boasting one of the worst win rates out of any West Ham manager in history, Fernandes has not let this dampen his enthusiasm after swapping the south coast for East London.
Player | Fee |
Lucas Paqueta | £51m |
Sebastian Haller | £45m |
Mateus Fernandes | £40m |
Max Kilman | Fee rising to £40m |
Mohammed Kudus | £38m |
Speaking to West Ham’s media team, Fernandes had this to say: “I’m very happy to be here. I’m very excited to play for West Ham, I think it’s a big step for me.
“It’s a big club, a massive club. The project, the stadium, the city, everything.
“I want to try to play football, enjoy football, not just run and try to score, but try to play good football.
“I think the most important thing is to try to give everything every day.”
If Fernandes does, in fact, “give everything” like he claims, coupled with the obvious technical talent he possesses, David Sullivan and Co. will have secured a quality signing.
