West Ham United are interested in signing Sevilla's Ruben Vargas.

The Hammers are gearing up for a season in the Championship by aiming to make additions for Nuno Espirito Santo's side as soon as possible.

Keiber Lamadrid was technically the Irons' first signing of the summer after they triggered the option to buy the young winger for around £1million.

West Ham have been mainly focused on outgoings, recently sanctioning the sale of Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham

Nuno could soon land a new Portuguese star in Gustavo Sa, after a deal was agreed with Famalicao for the midfielder.

However, Vargas is next on the agenda for West Ham, as the Hammers appear to have made the first move in the transfer race.

West Ham initiate contact for Ruben Vargas

According to the Spanish outlet Orgullo Biri, West Ham have initiated contact to try and sign Vargas.

The winger has been "shining" at the World Cup with Switzerland, as his nation are set to take on Colombia on Tuesday for a spot in the quarter-finals.

The Hammers are the "first club to contact" the La Liga side to try and gather information on how a deal would be possible.

Sevilla are not said to be in a hurry to sell, but may consider a sale for a fee that exceeds £13m or £17m, though this could change due to his World Cup displays.

There has been previous talk of the 27-year-old leaving for over £20m, and with interest from several Premier League clubs, it seems likely that the Irons will have to dig deep into their pockets for this one.

Sevilla would appreciate a big sale this summer, though they also see the benefits to keeping the player around.

That said, there may be clear reasons why Nuno wants to sign Vargas.

What Vargas could bring for Nuno

It's said that Vargas can operate on either the left or right wing, with the ability to unsettle defences.

The Switzerland international has three goal involvements in three starts for his nation, and often turns up for his country at these tournaments.

Vargas ranks among the best dribble-per-90 rates among wingers at the World Cup, boasting 2.17 successful take-ons per match.

He has an excellent 60 per cent dribble success percentage and could be exactly what Nuno needs: a direct winger.

With more exits to come, it's brilliant to see more talk around incomings at the London Stadium.
