What Edson Alvarez now wants to do at West Ham as Mexico return shut down
Edson Alvarez' West Ham career could still have light at the end of the tunnel.
The Mexican midfielder has struggled to make his way into Nuno Espirito Santo's squad, and has routinely been linked with a move away.
He spent last season out on loan at Fenerbahce, with the Hammers hoping the Turkish side would take up their option to buy.
Injury put an early end to his season, but his future has remained in question, even weeks after the window has come to an end.
Plenty of those transfer rumours have been about a return to his home country of Mexico.
Recent links have touted him to make a move to Liga MX side Chivas, with local Mexican media now responding to those claims.
Edson Alvarez's West Ham motivation emerges as Chivas links clarified
Edson Alvarez's future at West Ham remains uncertain after falling out of favour at London Stadium.
Links away from E20 have been frequent, with Liga MX side Chivas among those mentioned, but the midfielder's priorities have emerged amid an update on his future.
According to Claro Sports journalist Jose Maria Garrido via Chivas Pasion, a transfer for Alvarez is not on Chivas' agenda.
Additionally, the Mexican reporter shares that Alvarez is "fighting to earn a place at West Ham," despite not featuring in a matchday squad since the Carabao Cup game against Portsmouth in August.
Alvarez has been issuing West Ham hints on his social media, pointing towards a possible return to the fold.
However, it does remain to be seen if the 28-year-old is able to convince Nuno of his qualities, with his presence, or lack thereof, against Southampton this weekend a possible clue to the answer.
Will Nuno allow Alvarez back into the fold?
Alvarez is training with the first-team squad, as seen by the aforementioned social post, so he has not entirely been shunned by Nuno.
And the Irons manager has admitted that the Mexican's chance will come at London Stadium.
Speaking on 13 October in a press conference, he said: "Not all the players have played yet, but the chances will come. All of the players in the building are part of our plans."
So, alongside Nuno's comments, Alvarez' commitment to pushing for his place, and a move to Chivas off the table, the midfielder may yet be an influential figure in E20.
