What Caleb Wiley wants from loan move as West Ham transfer rival emerges

West Ham United know what it will take to convince Caleb Wiley to join.

The 21-year-old left wing-back joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024 from MLS side Atlanta United.

Since then, he's yet to make a competitive first-team appearance for the Blues, but is a three-cap USA international.

With El Hadji Malick Diouf set to join Brentford in a £40million deal, Nuno Espirito Santo may need to find a new left-sided defender before the deadline.

The American has spent time out on loan in the Championship with Watford over the last two seasons.

And now, he may well be ready for his third spell in England's second tier, with the London Stadium his possible destination.

Who is trying to beat West Ham to Caleb Wiley's signature?

Wiley's name was tentatively linked to West Ham on Friday, with suggestions being that he could be a late-window option.

However, the Hammers' mooted interest in the young defender has now been made more concrete.

Alan Nixon claims via Patreon on Friday that West Ham do indeed hold an interest in signing Wiley before the 1 September deadline.

They aren't alone in feeling that way either, with Preston North End also claimed to be making attempts to secure his services.

Nixon's report claims that Wiley wants to join a team where he can improve through playing regular football.

Should the aforementioned Diouf indeed leave E20 before the deadline, then West Ham would surely tick that box for Wiley.

But what is the one major red flag that he would bring to the Irons if he's signed?

When did Wiley last make an appearance in a match?

With a handful of Championship games under his belt at Watford as well as MLS and Ligue 1 experience too, Wiley has good pedigree.

It would, therefore, be a potentially very exciting addition for West Ham to make.

There is, however, one aspect of any potential deal that West Ham will need to make sure they're happy with before signing him: his fitness.

Watford were made to end his loan spell from Chelsea in January after dealing with a lingering back injury.

As a result, he's not played a minute of football since 18 October 2025, in which he played 60 minutes in Watford's 1-0 Championship defeat to Sheffield United.

Even if he does sign, Wiley will surely require a number of weeks to build his match fitness up, limiting his Irons impact in 2026-27 further.

So, it's a deal that wouldn't be without its risks at all for the Hammers, but if he can stay fit, Wiley could be a top player at Championship level.
